Tekken Tag Tournament Wrap Up

The format for this tournament was as follows;  5 pools of players play everyone else in there pool.  The best winning record automatically advances to the finals.  The second best record goes to a wild card pool.  In the wild card pool the top three advance to the finals.   The winner would be determined by another round robin in the final pool.  Here are the results;

Pool 1

The green n/a in King III's row means that he won by default after Andrew left.  Black N/A's stand for matches that were skipped since they would not have made a difference.

Pool 2

The match between Morpheus and Jake (not the regular Jake in prior tournaments) was a very close match.   Morpheus would be the one who would go on to the finals however.   It this also featured our youngest and most inexperienced player Jimmy.  He just came to have a good time and most every one was cheered him on in his matches and were all telling him to push the triangle button so he could counter a move.  A couple times he was successful and it was fun to hear every one cheering for him.  Unfortunately he would not get any victories.

Pool 3

Thanks to this pool our tournament went longer than expected.   There was a three way tie so instead of sending one to the finals and one to the wild card pool,  all three would go to the wild card pool.  Doubling the amount of matches in the wild card pool.  A note worthy match was Jusan and Drac.  Drac, the defending Game Hits Champion, was down 2 games to 0  (we did best of 5)  Then Drac battled his way back to win three strait and get the win over Jusan.   It also appeared that he was well on his way to another stunning comeback against Pao, but Pao managed to hold him off to force the three way tie.

Pool 4

There were originally five in this pool.  Miguel had a win over Ryan, but lost to Trigon.  After that he said that he had to go.  It is unfortunate to, because he had a good chance to advance to the wild card pool.

Pool 5

This pool featured Ali (our first Tekken Tag Champion) and Deon. Deon had gone to nationals and placed 13th.  Ali would prove to have Deon's number as he would go on to the finals and force Deon to fight his way through the wild card pool.

Wildcard Pool

After about four rounds it was no longer necessary to continue Deon, Drac and Jusan each had four wins.  It was imposable for any other participant to obtain 4 wins so we began the finals.  A bit of noteworthiness however was the fact that Drac and Jusan were part of the three way tie with Pao in pool 3.  Pao who beat Drac in the preliminary round lost in their rematch.

Final Pool

The finals were sped up to find just the winner.  Since this wasn't a pentathlon scoring for the first 5 places wouldn't matter.  Another reason was that Deon had to leave, and I thought it would be a shame for someone to come so far into the tournament only to have to leave.  We had Deon play all his matches.  If he won them all then he would be the winner and we would battle it out for second.  Deon went through all his matches, except one.......Ali.  This would be a rematch from the prelims when Ali beat him.  While Deon gave him a run, there was just something about Ali's game play that once again Deon could not get past.  Now Deon had one loss.  He had to stick around to see if one loss would be enough to win.   Every one had one loss at this point so all we had to do was go through untill someone won all their matches.  This was a different style of round robin.   Ali went against Drac and Drac won.  This would give Ali his second loss, so we let Drac go on.  Drac won all his bouts except the his last one against Jusan.  Now every one had a two losses except Deon and Jusan who now had to "run the gauntlet"   Jusan successfully went through all his matches to hold on to a won loss record.  This won loss was to Deon.  So now we had two people with only once loss so now a tie breaker would make the decision.   Deon lost to Jusan in the tie breaker and ended up in second.  While Jusan would end up with the win.
