Street Fighter 3rd Strike Tournament Wrap Up

Capcom Pentathlon Game 4

The format for this tournament was as follows;  5 pools of players play everyone else in there pool.  The best winning record automatically advances to the finals.  The second best record goes to a wild card pool.  Because of the amount of talent and due to running on two TVs there was also an added Sudden Death Pool.  This pool would involve the 3rd best from each pool and they would battle it out to get a spot in the wild card pool.   In the wild card pool the top three advance to the finals.   The winner would be determined by another round robin in the final pool.  Here are the results;

Pool 1

This pool was a straight forward pool.   Mark advanced to the finals.  Pat would go the wild card pool and Chris would be given another chance in the sudden death pool.

Pool 2

Another straight forward pool.  I guess the closest battle was the first one between Matt and Trigon.  Trigon struggled but managed to sweep to go to the finals.

Pool 4

Nothing new here.  I felt bad for Epiy though.  Not because he lost his matches, but because I don't think I ever pronounced his name right the entire night.  Oh well he was a winner of a $10 random prize though.

So there you have it.  Not a single tie breaker in any of the Pools.  If made things easy for me though.

Sudden Death Pool

The reason for this pool was to give the people who were third in their pool another chance to prove themselves.  As long as there are two games and systems available this will probably be the trend from here on out.  What proves that this wasn't a waste of time is that two of the three that advanced to the wild card pool actually went on to the finals where they made a difference.  In this pool there was a tie between Jeff W and Chris T.  Jeff won the tie breaker to go on to the wild card pool.

Wildcard Pool

This was the largest wildcard pool ever.  All eight in this would be competing for only three spots in the finals.  Dan and Bryce who came up from the Sudden Death Pool would go on to the finals.  Dan lost to Bryce in the SD but Managed to sweep all seven other participants in the wildcard pool.  Other rematches from earlier matches included Bryce and Arlow.  Arlow won in their preliminary pool, but Bryce was able to avenge his loss in the wildcard pool.  This one almost ended in a tie as well.  Bryce and Matt C were the last to match.  If Matt lost we would have had to had a tie breaker with Jeff.  As it turned out though he was able to give Bryce his second loss.  They would both advance to the finals along with Dan.

Final Pool

The finals were really exiting Trigon and Raul were both on a winning streak when they had to face each other.  Raul beat Trigon and looked as though he may have the tournament wrapped up at the end but on the very last bout Debokin was able to score the biggest upset of the night as he put a loss on Raul's otherwise perfect record.  Trigon watched in amazement as the event unfolded.  This would mean that Trigon and Raul would tie for the pentathlon points at 9 each instead of Raul taking all 10 and Trigon ending up with 8. This was important because Trigon now would lead the pentathlon by 5 points instead of only 3.

Dan who swept though the Wildcard rounds managed to pick up only one win.  This win would prove to be the spoiler for Bryce who would have tied for 5th if he had won.  Bryce was able to win over Debokin who beat Bryce in their preliminary pool. However with Debokin's upset over Raul this would ensure Debokin the 5th place all to him self.

Matt C was able to come out of the Wildcard pool and take 3rd in the finals.
