NBA Showtime

Midway for Dreamcast

Extreme Basketball

1-4 Players

Describe NBA Showtime in one sentence.

NBA Jam!

Wasn’t the original NBA Jam made a decade ago?

Something like that. It’s the game that got Midway started on their extreme sports kick, and featured 2-on-2 fast action basketball.

So what’s new in this version?

Not much. Ah, sweet nostalgia! This game harkens all the way back to the original NBA Jam, with some major graphical overhauls but not an awful lot more.

What’s good?

Multiplayer!!! Out of all of Midway’s sports games, this one is by far the most fun with 4 players, since each person controls one character, and there are no AI players on the court. Polygon graphics are nice, not great, but they lend themselves to some cinematic replays of the over-the-top dunks. Gameplay is classic Jam – there are only two buttons plus turbo to keep track of, and with only two players per team it’s easy to follow the action. The slams are bigger, better, and even more insane than ever before, the "on fire" element is in play, 10’ vertical jumping blocks are commonplace, and there are a couple of new moves to make the gameplay even more dynamic. Easy alley-oops have been implemented, and there’s a crazy new type of dunk where both teammates go up and double slam the ball.

What’s bad?

Not much. This game came out a couple of years ago, so the graphics aren’t exactly cutting edge… in fact, you might be turned off by them initially, but the gameplay will quickly draw you in, and after a few of the amazingly wacky slams you’ll be hooked.

What’s the craziest thing in NBA Showtime?

Playing as team mascots. Or a giant monkey.

How do you rate this game?

Graphics – 7 (It’s dated)

Sound – 7 (Standard, announcer is pretty basic, not much in the way of taunts)

Replay – 9 (NBA Showtime is one of the best 4 player party games ever made)

Overall: 8
