Pat’s Take on the News – May 2001

Sony Posts Profits of $127 Million for Q1 2001.

Good for Sony. If you believe their claims that the profits are thanks to the PS2, though, think again. Sony is making money the same way they always have – through their strong sales of electronics products and due to the fact that PS2 isn’t selling all that well, and Sony isn’t losing a ton of money on every systems sold like they did at the end of last year.

Columbine Families Sue Game Companies

Well, you probably know how I feel about this one. I’d like to also point out further proof that these people are incredibly out of touch with reality – they’ve named Atari in the lawsuit! Atari! I suppose kids who played Combat on their VCS systems in the late 70s have grown up to be serial killers…

Microsoft and Dream Factory Attach Bruce Lee License to Game Engine

Let’s hope that this Bruce Lee game is better than past efforts to bring the greatest martial artist who ever lived into a video game. Where I’m concerned, Fei Long of Super Street Fighter II fame (and more recently, SFA 3), is the best Bruce Lee look-alike in a game so far. Jann Lee of DoA 2 is also pretty good. The worst? Probably an even tie between Tekken’s Law and World Heroes’ Dragon.

Pokemon Crystal Due for the U.S. in July

Isn’t this over yet? Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon Silver, Pokemon Gold, and now Pokemon Crystal… when are six games really only two games? Nintendo marketing people must be geniuses.

Lucasarts Cancels Obi-Wan for PC, Announces Obi-Wan for XBox

Because LucasArts felt that the game was not fit for its discerning PC audience, but obviously believes that console gamers have decidedly lower standards…

GameFan is Dead, Long Live GameGO! GameGO?

Yes, GameGO! is the new magazine from some of the leftovers from the recently disbanded GameFan magazine and website. Their not sure if the new mag will be monthly or bi-monthly yet, or whether it will be available in stores or via mail order only. Sounds like they’re already off to a good start.

Daily Radar Drops Off the Radar

Yep, it’s gone. Anyone want to place bets on which gaming site is next? My guess is IGN, especially since they’ve started charging people to read about info that other sites have had posted for days already…

Nintendo Announces “Advanced” Versions of Several Classics

Super Mario Bros. 3, Yoshi’s Island, Yoshi’s Story, Metroid, Zelda… add those to Capcom’s SSFIIT and Final Fight One and the GBA is shaping up to be a 2D fans dream system! I’ll have mine in hand by June, if not sooner, and there are already a slew of games on my list of must-haves.
