Uncle Brad’s Top Ten RPG’s of All Time

All right, I have caught all kinds of hell since I made that statement about "Final Fantasy VIII is one of the five best RPG’s ever made" last week, and deservedly so. I guess that I just didn’t realize the gravity of such a statement; I blame my cold medication. Anyway, to put things a little more into perspective, here’s my ten favorite RPG’s of all time. Keep in mind that this list does not include action-RPG’s, so kickass titles like Super Metroid, Secret of Mana, and Castlevania: SOTN do not show up, even though they are awesome. Also, I’m a fickle man, so my tastes change regularly. Because of this, and in the interest of avoiding further conflict with my RPG-loving brethren, I will list then in alphabetical order, rather than in order of greatness. Well, here we go:

  • Chronotrigger – Super Nintendo
  • Final Fantasy IV – Super Nintendo
  • Final Fantasy VIII – Playstation
  • Grandia – Saturn
  • Lunar: Silver Star Story – Playstation
  • Lunar: Eternal Blue – Sega CD
  • Panzer Dragoon Saga – Saturn
  • Phantasy Star – Sega Master System
  • Phantasy Star IV – Genesis
  • Xenogears – Playstation

Well, there you have it. It turns out to be a pretty even mix of old- and new-school stuff. I’m sure no one agrees with this list completely, but I think almost everyone will agree with most of it. Of course, this list has been compiled before the flood of Square stuff, including Chrono Cross and Legend of Mana, has been released, as well as the one-two punch of Dragon Quest VII and Legend of Dragoon. My precious list could look very different by this time next year. Yes, it’s truly a great time to be an RPG gamer.
